This course introduces students to the development and role of international law and international organizations as an exercise of cooperation by evaluating the causes and consequences of collective action taken by states, intergovernmental and transnational actors. We will critically evaluate the international political forces that impact the form and function of international institutions (broadly understood), with an eye towards the implications of uneven power distribution for access, influence and, ultimately, institutional effectiveness. The first half of the course introduces students to the study of international law and organizations; the second half of the course focuses on the key international organizations and issue areas that structure international relations.
