German Studies Minor

Interim Director:  Daniel Leisawitz, Chair, Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
Professors: Cragin (History), Hartford (Music)
Lecturer: Terzioglu

Muhlenberg College’s long history of German-language instruction and connections with Pennsylvania’s German immigrants are an important part of our culture. Today’s German Studies classes include the new diversity of Germany and its significant immigrant populations. Our interdisciplinary German Studies minor combines a grounding in the German language with a range of courses in German history, politics, and culture. We encourage our German Studies students to consider studying abroad in a German-speaking country, where they can reinforce their language skills and better connect German with other areas of academic, personal, and professional interest.

Minor Requirements

Students minoring in German Studies take six courses consisting of a least two language courses beyond GRC 102 - Elementary German II , and four electives from the German Studies program offerings. Your faculty will help you navigate the choices in this interdisciplinary program and will advise you carefully to see how you can most effectively leverage your language skills with your other interests. Courses taken abroad through other institutions are pre-approved for inclusion in the program through the advising process.

German Studies minors must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.00 in their language courses or demonstrate an equivalent command of the language. All minors must also maintain a grade point average of at least 2.00 in all courses required for the minor.
