Statistics is the science (and art) of learning from data; including the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, as well as effective communication and presentation of results relying on data. The statistics major aims to provide a solid mathematical and computational foundation and prepare students in both applied and theoretical statistics. Students will have exposure to articulating research questions and hypotheses, experimental design and effective data collection techniques, processing and analyzing data through current statistical software standards, and communicating oral and written results. Students will be introduced to the mathematical foundations of statistics, including probability distributions which are essential for incorporating uncertainty in statistical models. Throughout the required coursework, students will apply concepts to real world problems across multiple disciplines.
