SPN 330 - Culinary Cultures Course unit(s): 1 Meets Explore Core requirement (students beginning Fall 2024 and later): GP Prerequisite(s): SNC 301 Conversation & Debate or SNC 303 Spanish for Heritage Speakers II This course explores the role of food in shaping the cultural, social, and economic landscape of Latin America from ancient civilizations to contemporary societies. By delving into primary sources, academic texts, and contemporary literature, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how food reflects and influences identity, power dynamics, migration, globalization, and sustainability in Latin America and Spain. Through a combination of historical analysis, anthropological perspectives, culinary studies, and literary excerpts students will examine the diverse ingredients, cooking techniques, rituals, and culinary traditions that have evolved over centuries. Taught in Spanish, this course reinforces linguistic and cultural skills.
