SPN 424 - Marginal Voices in the Hispanic World

Course unit(s): 1
Meets GAR (students beginning prior to Fall 2024): HU
Prerequisite(s): SNC 304 Texts & Contexts
Literature, like music, has a list of greatest hits… the canon, the list of texts and authors that appear on standardized tests and in anthologies. In this course we will look beyond those texts to those that have been historically pushed to the margins: women, indigenous, Afro descendent, ethnic and linguistic minorities, immigrants, all of those excluded or simply missing from the canon. We will consider why the canon exists and what forces sustain it. The relationship between literature and communities will provide a backdrop for the primary and critical texts we will read: what does the presence or absence of a set of voices imply for society and social equity? The specific focus will vary by semester, to allow for an in-depth exploration of the selected group.

Taught in Spanish.
