SPN 321 - Roots of the Hispanic World Course unit(s): 1 Meets GAR (students beginning prior to Fall 2024): Meets general academic requirements HU and DE. Meets Explore Core requirement (students beginning Fall 2024 and later): GP Prerequisite(s): SNC 301 Conversation & Debate or SNC 303 Spanish for Heritage Speakers II What is it that connects the cultures of Latin America with those of Spain? In this course we provide tools and strategies for exploring the political, social, intellectual, artistic, and literary development of the Spanish-speaking world from the earliest history to Latin America’s independence from Spain. We will examine the key historical moments that have influenced both regions, offering insights into the geographic, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity of both Spain and Latin America. Engaging with graphic evidence, written texts, and multimedia resources, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complex realities and intersections of race, class, and gender in the settlement of the Iberian Peninsula, the pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas, the arrival of Spain in the Americas, colonialism, imperialism, revolutions, and independence in the 19th Century. Conducted in Spanish, this course builds on language and cultural skills.
