Misfortune, loss, suffering, and sorrow are inescapable facts of life. We don’t like to dwell on these facts, and yet, somehow, we can’t help it. We shake our heads as we spontaneously think: “How can this be?” “Why did this happen?” “How can a person do that?” In this class we will use a wide lens to examine the ways people have taken up, thought about, and tried to answer these questions. In addition, we will consider our options to responding to evil. Among other subjects, we will discuss responsibility, forgiveness, and making amends. No previous experience in philosophy is required.
