BUS 260 - Organizational Leadership & Peer Education

Course unit(s): 1
Meets GAR (students beginning prior to Fall 2024): Meets general academic requirement IL.
Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor required
In this integrated learning course, we will explore two perspectives, Organizational Leadership and Peer Education.  Students enrolled in the course are engaged in helping/service relationships on campus and this will be a context in which we will apply learning about organizational leadership. Students will have rich and challenging experiences in their peer educator roles and by participating in an Interpersonal Relations Lab, an intensive learning group experience.  We will have meaningful reflections on these experiences through writing and in class discussion with guest speakers and content experts. Scholarly readings will allow students to conceptualize and understand the issues they are experiencing. Bringing together experience and practice offers the possibility of doing significant work, growing personally, while learning and internalizing theory. Through experiential-based activities, students will improve their abilities to authentically engage, communicate, and influence.  As part of the course all students will gain certification as peer educators.

Students must be engaged in service or peer leadership.  Examples include:  RA’s, Orientation Leaders, Athlete Mentors, Tutors, PHAM, MALT, SAID, MHPA, VOS, Emerging Leaders, Fraternity & Sorority Diversity Chairs, Leaders of Affinity Groups, Student Choreographers, Theater Directors, Internships that serve peers, etc. This course satisifes the IL requirement.
