DEI 553 - Diversity and the Organization Course unit(s): 0.5 Linking theory to practice, this course examines the ways in which organizations (whether public, private, corporate or non-profit) reflect values of equity and inequity in the workplace and subsequently impact employee growth, development, and performance. Emphasis will be placed on both organizational policy and organizational culture. Finally, through simulation exercises, case studies, and projects, students will learn how effective leadership fosters a sense of belonging, helps employees reach their highest potential, and advances the organization’s mission, goals, and values. Though this course is not defined by human resources considerations, this aspect of organizational culture and the legal expectations of employers and employees will also be addressed. Upon successful completion of the course, students will:
● Understand what is meant by diversity in the workplace, explore its challenges and benefits, and learn to create a workplace environment that capitalizes on these benefits.
● Develop an understanding of the multitude of ways in which power and privilege impact organizations and shape employee experiences and career trajectories.
● Learn about inclusive organizational leadership and effective change management.
● Become familiar with the laws that regulate issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.
