HST 223 - Revolutionary America Course unit(s): 1 Meets GAR (students beginning prior to Fall 2024): Meets general academic requirement HU . An examination of society, culture, and politics in British North America and the new United States in the era of the American Revolution, 1763-1800. We will consider the origins and outcomes of the military conflict that defined the era, the broader social and cultural contexts in which it occurred, and the political settlements that followed in the Confederation and Constitution eras. Key questions for the semester will include: how revolutionary was the Revolution, and for whom? And what did liberty mean for people of differing identities and experiences—male and female; white, Black, and Indigenous; wealthy and poor; rebel and loyalist?
