THR 212 - Performance Studies Course unit(s): 1 Meets requirement: W Prerequisite(s): THR 100 Theatre & Society: An Historical Introduction This course introduces the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of Performance Studies and investigates the human body engaged in symbolic action using methods drawn from such disciplines as the performing arts, cultural anthropology, ritual studies, and popular culture studies. Thus, it analyzes aestheticized forms like theatre, performance art, dance, and music but also inquires into cultural performances like political protests, fashion shows, sporting events, and worship services. Students will learn the basic history of the field and develop a working knowledge of its scholarly methods and proclivities.
