ENG 329, 330 - Nineteenth Century British Fiction Course unit(s): 1 Meets requirement: W when offered as 330 In this course, we will read some of the best-loved novels of all time, written during the century when the novel as we know it came to be. Writers like Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins and the Brontë sisters adapted the romance and the gothic to help create a new form for a widespread and expanding middle-class readership. During the time of rapid social change, the novel became a site for public debate about child labor, marriage, sexuality, the rights of women, the impact of technology and the progress of empire. Satisfies departmental Prose requirement.
