ENG 247, 248 - Shakespeare Course unit(s): 1 Meets GAR (students beginning prior to Fall 2024): Meets general academic requirement HU. Meets requirement: W when offered as 248 A study of Shakespeare’s work in different genres drawn from the full range of his career as poet and playwright and, occasionally, of one or two plays by his contemporaries. Plays are treated both as literary texts requiring close reading and as scripts designed for theatrical performance in public playhouses of Elizabethan and Jacobean England. Attention paid throughout to questions of gender and sexuality, authority in family and state, and drama as social expression. Satisfies Departmental Drama/Transmedia requirement and Social Justice requirement.
