ARS 110 - Printmaking I Course unit(s): 1 Meets GAR (students beginning prior to Fall 2024): Meets general academic requirement AR. Meets Explore Core requirement (students beginning Fall 2024 and later): CE Printmaking I is an experiential course that will introduce students to 21st century printmaking techniques that combine hand pulled print processes such as screenprint and linocut with digital media. Printmaking is the process of transferring an image from one surface to another in order to create multiple copies. From the invention of the printed book to a simple rubber stamp, printmaking has had an impact on daily life. In this course we will focus on socially engaged printmaking that uses images to reach a wide audience. We will look at historic and contemporary examples of the power of print from protest posters to street art. Students will create posters, zines, and print installations using printmaking techniques. Students will be introduced to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as a way to develop imagery while considering issues such as appropriation art and copyright. Students will then transform these images onto blocks and screens to produce prints. This course teaches skills from the ground up- no prior art experience is expected. Four contact hours per week.
