SOC 235 - Inequality & Power Course unit(s): 1 Meets GAR (students beginning prior to Fall 2024): Meets general academic requirement DE. Prerequisite(s): SOC 101 - Introduction to Sociology . The study of inequality (how it emerges, its various manifestations, and why it persists) is a cornerstone of sociology. This course is designed for those who are interested in the theoretical conceptions and critiques of power and privilege and their combined effects on socio-political and economic life. The course is divided into three parts: a brief survey of the various theoretical perspectives of inequality and stratification; an examination of the complex intersections of race, ethnicity, and class structures in American society; and a discussion of gendered effects of migrant work within a global and comparative perspective.
