The Muhlenberg Scholars Program is designed to enhance the education of talented students by providing unique opportunities for intellectual exploration, growth, and development. Outstanding first-year students are invited to join the Scholars Program when they are admitted to the College. These individuals will normally have Scholastic Aptitude Test scores of 1350 (Critical Reading and Math) or greater, have graduated in the top tenth of their high school class, and have significant extracurricular accomplishments.
Students already studying at Muhlenberg may be admitted to the Scholars Program no later than the fall semester of the sophomore year. To be considered for the program, students should be nominated by a faculty member and have an overall grade point average of at least 3.50.
Scholars courses are small, interdisciplinary, discussion-oriented courses in which the student is encouraged to grapple creatively with problems at the forefront of current research. The emphasis is on original source materials rather than textbooks. The goal is to create a community of inquiry where professor and student reason together about topics of current interest.
Students who successfully complete the Scholars Program receive a special certificate at graduation as well as the designation “Muhlenberg Scholar” on their diploma and transcript. To be eligible for this distinguished honor, a student must have an overall grade point average of at least 3.50 and have achieved at least a 3.250 grade point average in the following Scholars courses:
