This course offers a broad overview of the relationships among people living in and moving between Europe, Africa, and the Americas.  Spanning from roughly 1500-1888, course materials consider ways of life and death within the structures of colonialism and slavery, emphasizing resistance and revolution and piracy and pillaging in this dynamic zone.  We will discuss the various methods historians use to research and retell the past and focus on the interpretation of primary documents in historical writing.  The reading seminar culminates with each student undertaking primary research on a topic related to the Atlantic World.
